The scanner must have an OCR license to be able to read OCR. EZConfig displays what licenses are installed on the scanner.
Reading OCR requires a template that defines what specific OCR to be read, e.g. If the template defines 5 numeric OCR characters, it will only read OCR with 5 numeric characters.
The character string being read must be one of the OCR Font styles that are supported. See 'To configure an OCR template' step 3 below.
From the OCR-A and OCR-B character sets the following characters are supported: Upper case letters, numbers and the special characters: $ # \ / - + > <*
To enable OCR, refer to the chapter 'enabling OCR reading' in the 'OCR programming User Guide' available from www.honeywellaidc.com, or use the bar code in the attached OCR test sheet.
To configure an OCR template:
Scan the bar code 'Enter OCR Template' from the OCR programming User Guide (OCRTMP).
Scan the template characters from the 'OCR Programming Codes'-page in the OCR programming User Guide, that match the OCR code.
The first template character is always a 1 and the second defines what OCR-font to be scanned;
Both OCR A and B
For every character in the OCR, a template character needs to be defined. The most commonly used Template characters are:
Wild Card: Numeric = 5 - this can be used for positions with a numeric character.
Wild Card: Alpha = 6 - this can be used for positions with an alphabetic character.
Wild Card: Alphanumeric = 7 - this can be used for positions with an alpha- numeric character.
Wild Card: Any including [SPACE] = 8 - this can be used for positions with any OCR defined characters.
Scan the bar code 'Save OCR Template'.
A number of predefined templates are already supported in firmware, and can be found in the 'OCR programming User Guide'. To evaluate the predefined template for passports, the "passport test-sheet" can be used. Note:
When Encoding the template in a configuration bar code, use quotes around the parameters like: OCRTMP"12555550".
The scan performance or scan ability for OCR fonts can be greatly improved by disabling all other symbologies.
Besides the OCR configuration, In a keyboard mode it might be required to configure the local national keyboard, for the right characters to display.

Use Standard Range optics when reading large OCR codes (e.g.: Passport).
Limitations / Specifications:
Each row can have up to a maximum of 50 characters.
With up to 18 rows in a template.
With a maximum of 320 characters.
Internal gaps longer than one space are not allowed in a template.
Character Seize: The ideal height of an OCR character after sampling is about 20 pixels, but characters up to 50 pixels in height can be read.
