How can I change to Fingerprint from IPL on my Intermec (by Honeywell) EasyCoder PF2i or PF4i industrial printer? How can I change to IPL from ZSim on my Intermec EasyCoder PM4i industrial printer? How can I change to IPL from Direct Protocol on my Intermec EasyCoder PX4i or PX6i industrial printer?

What is the Intermec EasyCoder PFMX-Series?
The Intermec EasyCoder PFMX-series printers all use the same firmware line. Specific printers in the Intermec EasyCoder PFMX-series include:
'Legacy Firmware' - on Intermec EasyCoder PFMX series industrial printers is any firmware version earlier than "2.77.0" or "8.77.0": for 'IPL' and 'Fingerprint', respectively. Said another way, this is the firmware running EasyCoder PFMX series printers from before the current generation.
What Will be Covered?
If the printer is running a legacy PFMX-series firmware as defined, above and the desired change is to or from the 'IPL' Command Language, then the new Command Language cannot simply be selected from a menu. To change to or from the 'IPL' Command Language, the printer's firmware must actually be re-flashed.
This article will cover:
Determine whether the printer running a Legacy firmware version
Pitfalls when changing to- or from the 'IPL' Command Language, on printers with Legacy Firmware
How to change to or from 'IPL'. This involves:
Purchasing the Keyboard Overlay for the target Command Lanugage
Download the target Legacy firmware
Select the Command Language by re-flashing the firmware
Factory Default the printer
Select the Command Language manually, post-reflash: if not "Fingerprint" or "IPL"
IS THE PRINTER RUNNING A Legacy FIRMWARE VERSION?
For printers capable of running the latest firmware, the Command Language may be selected using the front-panel display and controls, via the printer's Web Admin console, or via PrintSet. For printers capable of running only legacy firmware versions, this is not the case. Because of this, the most recent firmware version the printer can run must be determined, before anything else is done.
Legacy PFMX-series firmware are versions "x.76.1" and earlier. For IPL, this means "2.76.1" or earlier and for Fingerprint, this means "8.76.1" or earlier.
If the printer is running firmware version "x.77.0" or later, then click here for instructions to change the Command Language to or from IPL using the printer's front panel display and controls instead of continuing with the steps below.
Carefully consider the all side of the process before re-flashing a printer with Legacy Firmware to or from the 'IPL' Command Language. There is much more to it than just flashing a new firmware file to the printer.
PITFALLS: BEFORE CONTINUING, BEWARE
To change to- or from IPL, the printer must be re-flashed with with the Legacy firmware version, in the desired Command Language. This will be either "IPL" (for IPL) or "Fingerprint" for all other Command Languages. The printer should then be Factory Defaulted. If a simulator such as ZSim or DSim is desired, then the simulator will need to be installed onto the printer after the printer after both the firmware re-flashed and the Factory Default. The process to install a simulator onto the printer is beyond the scope of this article.
Finally, on these older generation printers, the keyboard layout for the IPL Command Language is very different from that for the other Command Languages. CHANGE TO- OF FROM 'IPL'
Purchase the New 'Keyboard Overlay'
If changing the Command Language on a printer running a legacy firmware, consider attempting to purchase the Keyboard Overlay for the desired Command Language before starting the process. These parts may no longer be available directly from Honeywell but may be found at third-party resellers.
Download the Target Legacy Firmware
Click here to download an article that describes how to determine the most-recent firmware a PFMX-series printer can run. Find that latest version and use the links in that article to download the correct firmware version in the desired target Command Language rather than in the current Command Language.
Re-Flash the Firmware
Once the correct firmware archive has been downloaded, click here to download an article that describes how actually re-flash the printer with the desired firmware.
Factory Default the Printer
Once the printer's firmware has been re-flashed, a Factory Default should be done to give a clean foundation on which to build. Click here for instructions to manually Factory Default the printer.
Desired 'Command Language' Is Not 'IPL' or 'Fingerprint'
If the printer's desired Command Language is neither "IPL" nor "Fingerprint" if the desired Command Language is "Direct Procool", for example then click here for instructions to change the Command Language using the printer's front-panel display and controls.
