Any properly-functioning connection type - Local (non-USB), USB, or Network - may be used to drop a firmware file on the printer. This article, however, assumes that the printer has been installed using the most-recent Datamax print driver package - from Seagull Scientific. If this is not the case, then click here to download an article that tells how to properly install the printer. Follow those instructions and then return here.
This article will cover how to upgrade a Datamax H-Class printer to its latest firmware. NOTE: This article does not cover a firmware upgrade on the H-8308p: that H-Class printer uses a different process, which will be covered in its own article.
Click here to download "Firmware - H-Class (LCD) - firmware-LATEST": an archive that includes the Production version files for the Datamax H-Class (LCD) printers EXCEPT FOR H-8308p. Includes firmware (.ZG) files for H-4212, H-4310, H-4408, H-4606, H-6210, H-6212, H-6308, H-6310, H-8308. The firmware version included is "14.1371".
Extract - from the .ZIP archive - only the single firmware upgrade (.ZG) file for the printer to be upgraded. The printer's model will is included in the filename for each firmware upgrade file. Extract the firmware upgrade file to the workstation' Desktop.

Once the 'System Window' is shown, the firmware and Boot Loader version will be shown on the second and third line respectively under the 'CONFIGURATION' section title. Firmware line will start with "FW:" and the version entry will look like "14.1371 3/1/2013". The Boot Loader line will start with "BL:" and the version entry will look like "12.04 3/1/2013".
Press the 'MENU' button to exit the 'System Window' and return the printer to a 'Ready' state
Upgrading Firmware Issues
Follow these steps if the firmware file is sent and nothing happens or the printer restarts with the same firmware version:
Make sure the printer is set to DPL Language by pressing 'Menu' > 'System Settings' > 'Input Mode' > Select 'DPL' > press 'Enter' > press 'Exit' > 'Save Changes?' press 'YES'
Make sure the printer is set to Control Codes = 'Standard' by pressing 'Menu' > 'Communications' > 'Host Setting' > 'Control Codes' > Select 'Standard Codes' > press 'Enter' > press 'Exit' > 'Save Changes?' press 'YES' (restart the printer)
Make sure the printer Boot Loader version is 12.04 or higher. If the printer has a Boot Loader 10.07, the Boot loader needs to be upgraded via Parallel cable PRIOR to the firmware upgrade. Click here to download the Boot Loader file version 12.04 (BOOTXE99_1204.bs). The Boot Loader file can be sent to the printer following the same steps mentioned above to send the Firmware file.
