Is the Captuvo causing the Apple device screen to pop out? Does the Captuvo cause the iPhone battery to swell? Over time the Captuvo caused the iPod screen to pop out. What is causing the battery to swell in the Apple device? The iPhone came apart while in the Captuvo sled. What is causing the battery to expand in the Apple device? iPods have been overcharged by the sled causing the batteries to expand to the point of ruining the iPod.
It has been reported that iPhone and iPod devices are separating over time under a normal use case while being inserted in the Captuvo sled. After a review of available information this appears to be an issue with the Apple device and not the Captuvo.
Apple has acknowledged this problem with several earlier iPhone / iPod variants. The issue is due to the nature of the lithium-ion battery found internally on the Apple device. As all Li-On batteries age and reach the end of their life cycle they will swell. With a device that is daily used and charged, the swelling usually occurs during the second year, and only a percentage of the Apple devices swell extensively. The slim design of Apple products means that extensive bulge or swelling that occurs in the battery causes pressure on the screen and with enough swelling this can cause the Apple device to separate.
Environmental factors where and how the device is utilized can affect battery life and the amount of swelling that can occur. To the questions whether the Honeywell Captuvo, could have been one of the contributing environmental factors, our response is that all Captuvo devices are "Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad", so MFi qualified by Apple. Part of the qualification has to do with meeting the charge specification. On top of that, Honeywell understood the Apple devices have a mechanism in place that can isolate external power when it potentially could cause harm to the Apple device. It therefore is unlikely the Captuvo’s can be held liable for contributing to the Apple battery problem.
While there is no way to determine the exact life cycle of a Li-On battery please consider the length of time since the Apple device has been manufactured and has been in use.
Variants of Apple products with release year:
iPod 4 - 2010
iPod 5 - 2012
iPhone 5 - 2012
iPhone 5s - 2013
iPhone 6 - 2014
iPhone 6s - 2016
iPhone 7 - 2017
Due the nature of the failure, and considering that Apple warranty usually has expired, Honeywell suggests to contact Apple support to see if they will honor manufacturing fault claims for the customer specific scenario.
